While I am well aware that this uncharacteristically warm weather is not good for the world, it has been magical for the wardrobe. On my visit to the the Finerie Colab last week (I hope you've been- apparel including lots of local designers, housewares, design, oh my!), team member Jeannie said to me, "you look like the perfect balance of spring and winter."
Thank you very much, Jeannie.
Upon reflection, I realize that's not an easy tightrope to walk. As your very own personal stylist, I thought I'd share some of spring's trends with you, Dear Reader. And, of course, how to rock them right now. Enjoy!
Spring Fashion Trends You Can Wear Today.
Let's do this.
I'm not sure how long it's been since we've seen your shoulders, Dear Reader; but get ready to share. I find that many clients love their shoulders and yet it is rare for us to show them off. Start looking for asymmetrical pieces, one shoulder options as well as off the shoulder looks. Yup. Not just strapless (also great) but actual off-the shoulder numbers.
How to own them right now: Pair with structured trousers, tapered pants or high waist jeans for a more sophisticated (and warm look). If you need a jacket and the top allows, opt for a leather blazer. If not, a poncho over top that can be worn asymmetrically shows off a bit of your shoulder until you can take it off and reveal the whole look.
Best for: triangle, diamond, hourglass body types. An inverted triangle (your shoulders are wider than your hips) should avoid off the shoulder and strapless options but one shoulder looks work.
2. Jumpsuits and rompers.
You know how much I love a good jumpsuit. Don't get me started on rompers! If you've been dying to try the trend but aren't sure what style works for you, you might find my previous post on jumpsuits helpful. Layering is a great way to maximize the piece, but keep in mind that life becomes pretty complicated when you head to the rest room. I'm a big fan of rompers and have started wearing a long-sleeved option with black opaque tights. You can also go for textured tights if you like to show off your legs. As for jumpsuits, embrace the design. If it's more sophisticated, opt for strappy heels while the more workman-inspired looks are great with wooden platforms or clogs.
How to own them right now: If you are opting for a black jumpsuit, it's easy to wear it tomorrow. But if spring's prints or colors appeal to you, give it a colder weather vibe with a leather or denim jacket, a tailored vest or a long cardigan in a darker hue.
Best for: all body types depending on the style of the jumpsuit. If it's too small on top or bottom, go for a larger size and have it tailored. Otherwise, it's all about finding the style that complements your body. Need help? That's what I'm here for.
3. Baby lights or Angel lights.
I'm sorry, "what?" Don't worry, Dear Reader. I'm always paying attention to what you need to know. And, you need to know about Baby lights. An up and coming trend in hair, baby lights are intended to mimic the natural look that a child's hair has by the end of the summer. I once had a salesperson at Nordstrom ask if we colored our two-year old boy's hair. Yeah, those are baby lights. Interested? The good people at Essensuals mentioned this trend to me months ago and they've been perfecting the technique for months (so ahead of the curve), although under the name, "angel lights." And now you know.
Music to my ears. Slim fitting tunics continue to steal the show and aren't they just the most forgiving items ever? If you've got a mini that you've been pairing over leggings, consider trying them over wide or straight leg trousers, culottes or jeans. (Boot cut jeans aren't so good with this look, but most other cuts work well.)
How to own them right now: If you've opted for a spring print or hue, balance the cold weather look with a long cardigan. Ideally, the cardi is as long as the tunic or slightly longer. If your tunic has sleeves, you can skip the sweater and just pile on necklaces followed by a scarf. If your tunic is more winter than spring, consider tossing it over white jeans or opt for blue denim and white shoes.
Best for: triangle and diamond body types. Of course, anyone can embrace the tunic. It's really about how the print or color blocking compliment your body. If the tunic doesn't flatter you right away, make sure you are drawing the eye to the right place on your body to balance your frame. EX: Inverted triangles would do best to rock attention-getting shoes to draw the eye down and opting for a more subtle print on top.
5. Electrotherapy Skincare.
Believe it. For those of you who watch the Real Housewives of New Jersey (there is no judgement here, my dear) and the like, you are likely already very familiar with electrotherapy skincare. For the rest of you, Dermaspace owner Jody Leon explained it as "the gym for your skin." Want to know more? Follow Poplin on Instagram and Twitter for updates on my treatments (1 down, 2 to go) and keep an eye out for a Seattle Sunday post on Dermaspace. Can't wait? Watch the Dermaspace video for details.
6. White shoes.
And that naturally brings us to white shoes. Believe it. I prefer strappy heels, slip ons (especially those inspired by the classic slip on Vans), platforms or sandals. Of course, for the more fashion-forward set white sneakers will be gracing our presence, too.
How to own them right now: Bring them out when it isn't raining. If this is your first foray into white shoes since the 80's go for a less extreme look until you feel more comfortable. For instance, try them with jeans and a tunic or basic tee. If you have a print top with white accents, this look will work especially well.
Best for: Inverted triangle, hourglass and diamond body types. Again, nothing is stopping any of us from making this happen. It's all about how you style them.
Finally, as you are balancing winter and spring in your daily looks, here are a few more tricks of the trade:
1. Perforated leather- A great way to embrace your love of leather and bring it into warmer weather.
2. Camel- That camel coat you love transitions well into warmer weather and is an ideal alternative to black. Keep it in the mix.
3. Maxis- Never a bad idea, your maxi skirts and dresses for last spring are ideal under a cozy sweater with boots or try them with white shoes and a chambray shirt on warmer days.
4. Cuffs- Very current, owning one in gold or silver (or both) elevates every look.
5. Striped long sleeve shirt- We all love our striped shirts. Feel free to wear them with florals and bold prints to make dresses warmer and embrace spring.
6. Leather pants- Concerned about how to style leather pants as the weather heats up. Don't be. Opt for patent leather sandals or perforated leather slip on sneakers. Now that's effortless sophistication.
Off you go!
