Nordstrom Anniversary Picks: Coats & Jackets
As a personal stylist in Seattle, my goal is to help my clients elevate their looks so that each feels confident that her look is authentic to her personal style and flattering for her body type. One common theme over the last year has been to encourage women to swap out the cardigan for a jacket that's appropriate for the occassion and reflective of who they are.
Beyond that, here's one essential tip for the Northwesterner: We make a large percentage of our first impressions with our coats on. Yup. That's when we walk into interviews, we meet someone for coffee at a coffee shop, and so on. Let's face it, we are wearing some sort of coat or jacket the majority of the year. And the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is the ideal time to pick up fall pieces at lower prices. With that in mind, I'm focusing on my favorite coats and jackets from the Anniversary Sale line up. Interested in more of my Anniversary picks? Check out this blog post and more to come this week.
Enough talk. Let's get to it!
Top 25 Coats & Jackets from Anniversary 2016
If you loved the blush DVF trench from the spring, you'll appreciate this blush trench that is similar without the price tag. Blush can be an elegant go-to if you tend to prefer a neutral palette.
I can't get enough of the military inspired pieces. This androgynous look is timeless, functional and hip.
Leather is everywhere. Whether you are going for vegan leather (great for the rain and the wallet) or the real thing (best for elevating your look) a vest shows that you can take it to the next level. Pair with any sleeve length and know that you can rock this the majority of the year.
Remember the Vince leather jacket from the Poplin video? Here's this season's suede option. Yes, please.
There's a small percentage of the population that can rock this coat with confidence. If it's you, do it! Easier to pair than you might think, this array of neutrals works with any solid option and makes a statement.
Just right for the woman with a triangle, rectangle, diamond or hourglass figure. This suede option from Kate Spade is just right in the office or for a night out.
Cozy coats that remind you of your bathrobe are surprisingly polished. Just add a heel and watch as you transform your look. Let Kerry Washington's character on Scandal guide you.
There are never enough raincoats. All three color options are lovely and please remember: when you put together a great look, your North Face jacket is bringing you down. The a-line bottom of this jacket balances the collar so it can work for an Inverted Triangle body type.
Another love it or hate it option, I'm a big fan of this coat for the right woman. She's channeling her inner rockstar with this fearless everyday coat. Distressed jeans, ankle boots and a new tee each day, her uniform is uber cool.
You are bussing it to the office or walk from building to building throughout the day, yet you still want to show your polished, timeless style without resorting to your standard rain parka, this is the way to go. A classic that you'll have for years and years. Keep things current with modern shoes and accessories.
This is you in athleisure.
Plaid is back! Go full force with this bold print that still works with your wardrobe. Stay away from prints when coordinating your look and you are good to go. The best part? This coat is equally compelling with brown or black shoes.
If you don't have a denim jacket, this is a nice start. If it were up to me, I'd nudge you toward leather. But, if you are looking for a great jacket to toss on in the summer with prints, you can really never go wrong with this classic.
Personally, I'm completely obsessed with yellow. Although, I will say that yellow is the one color most clients call out when I ask them the colors they dislike. If you are with me on this one, this jacket is a dream. It's best for women who are drawing the eye up. In college, I picked up a suede jacket in this color from a vintage shop and wore it for years- until styles changed enough that the fit was simply too big to work. Why am I telling you this? Because if you like this, then grab it, because it could be years before you find something like this again.
For the urban, polished, effortless woman. So good.
I love a teddy bear coat for the right woman. She likes pieces that are unconventional, youthful and functional. If you are drawn to this piece, I vote for the wine option rather than the light grey. In this material the light grey just looks dingy. We're going for hip.
This looks so good on. If you struggle to find sleeves that aren't too tight on your arms, this is a great pick for you.
More blush! A topper is just right for a diamond shaped figure. This also works well for triangle shaped bodies. Try this over a sheath dress, like in the photo. It's also lovely with a tailored pant and feminine blouse.
I'm so glad that we're seeing more stylish options in larger sizes. This suede jacket is an investment, for sure. But, it's anything but boring and the drawstring waist gives you maximum control of the shape of the piece.
Another wrap coat, this tweed option makes this a classic piece without being forgettable. Plus, let's face it, this is a dream for the darkest days.
If the Trouve option isn't right for you (or it sells out), try this one from Levi's.
Burnt orange! Evening blue! Fun colors that draw attention. This shapeless option isn't going to show off your figure, but it is a nice choice if you are looking for a polished coat sans belt. This is another good choice for women with diamond shaped figures.
Halogen has really impressed me this year. The Nordstrom brand has some real winners and this is one of them. Designed in the US, Halogen tends to offer current styles at more affordable price points. Love these clean lines and of course, an unexpected color of leather is never a mistake. Remember, navy and dark purple can work as pseudo neutrals. Pair this with a handbag of the same color (even in a lighter or darker hue) to make creating outfits even easier.
Reversible! Cozy! Polished! Do it. Just remember that you need to balance this out with some elevated elements to keep it from looking sloppy. Options include hip shoes or bolder makeup. Picture it: hunter rain boots and lipstick or heeled boots and more natural makeup. See?
Last but not least, this rabbit fur vest with sleeves is intended for the woman who (a) is comfortable wearing real fur and (b) is looking to make a statement. I'm not super into fur vests, but if you have always wanted to try one, this is a nice segue. That's because the sleeves mean it will be easier for you to put an outfit together as you won't need to struggle with how to stay warm. When wearing fur (as when you wear leather), pair with natural fabrics like cotton, cashmere, denim to keep your look effortless.
