Fall Fashion Spotlight: Lightweight Jackets
As a personal stylist for women, I spend a great deal of my time with real women, helping each women determine her personal style. Knowing your personal style isn't enough. Clothes need to be functional for your life and realistic for your budget. And, of course, they should be flattering for your body type. This may sound tricky, but it isn't. It's all about having the proper filters to know what to wear and what to buy.
The weather is changing and that's a sure sign that it is time to make sure your collection of lightweight jackets is on point. Sure, you can keep wearing cardigans and yes, everyone needs a few. But, if you are still wearing cardigans on the daily, it's time to mix things up and elevate your overall look with a jacket. Not to worry, there are jackets that are right for everyone. Let's get you started.
2018 Fall Fashion Spotlight: Lightweight Jackets
1. Patent leather.
Man, I love a good patent leather jacket. Vegan leather. Whatever the faux leather, I'm into it. This is because it couldn't be more functional for life in the Pacific Northwest. Wear it in the rain. Clean it off easily. And, it's super affordable so you can experiment with colors and styles. Shiny patent leather is coming back. I'm very enthusiastic.
2. Corduroy.
Who would have ever thought? I have so many clients who cling to their favorite corduroy pants. They haven't felt current in a while, but this is a great sign for the near future. Corduroy jackets (a nod to the Western and Americana trends) are appearing and that makes for a nice, cozy situation.
3. Athleisure.
This trend never stops. Sporty, lightweight jackets are ubiquitous. Here's the thing: Remember to be authentic to your personal style and keep your look elevated. Yes, a sporty jacket is great when you are going to your workout or heading out to kayak. It is not going to complete your work outfit and make a strong first impression in professional settings.
4. Your Own Neutral.
When people speak of neutrals, they are often referring to the traditional color palette- black, brown, perhaps grey. Those are all useful. But your neutral can be something else. Camo, greens, blues, even rose. Matching 101 is explains more.
5. Classic.
When choosing your lightweight jacket, think about your personal style. Do you prefer classic looks? If so, a trench coat is a solid option. Make sure that it is flattering for your body type and the color works well with your existing pieces.
6. Asymmetrical.
I am a big fan of a good asymmetrical jacket. They feel more polished and generally edgier. Plus, they are more modern and are a nice alternative to a standard blazer.
7. Blazer.
But a blazer can be AMAZING. Opt for blazers that don't feel like one half of the suit you have in the back of your closet unless you are pairing it with another piece that is of the same caliber. (For instance, go with a skirt of the same fabric but different color or print.) Blazers made from fabric that stretches can be a major win for women with larger shoulders as they allow you to comfortably wear one. If you have a rectangle shaped figure (shoulders and hips are aligned and your waist is not well defined), make sure you try a more feminine jacket to balance out your frame.
8. Vest.
I realize that a vest is not technically a jacket. Well, it's sort of a jacket without sleeves. Does that count? Take a look at this post about How to Wear a Vest.
