Jonesing to Shop? Your Guide to Relevant 2021 Spring Trends
I don’t know about you, but I haven’t worn a heel since February of last year. So, the idea of spring fashion trends seems wildly out of step with my everyday life. That being said, as the sun has come out, I’ve found myself gazing at a dress or two online and only coming up for air hours and several websites later. President Biden’s announcement that there should be enough vaccines for all Americans by May put a major spring in my step. Sure, having “enough vaccines” for everyone doesn’t mean we’ll be wearing heels again in May, but at least there’s light at the end of the tunnel. And, I, for one am ready to bring that fresh enthusiasm to my wardrobe.
So, here we are. Most of us at home in the softest pants available, both dreading and dreaming of the day when putting together a full outfit is not a special occasion of its own. To get you started, I thought I’d offer up Spring Fashion Trends that actually mean something to you, right now, and in the coming months. This is a big list, so we’ll break it into a few posts. Enjoy! And, as always, let me know what you think.
2021 Spring Fashion Trends for your Real Life In and Out of Lockdown
Opt for Pieces that Show Your Shape
I know, I know. After a year at home the idea of showing your shape may not sound like a real winner. But, I can assure you that if you’ve been living in oversized sweats, reminding yourself of what your body looks like can bring a real moment of self confidence- if you do it right. Remember to keep in mind your body type and create balance. Be kind to yourself. Celebrate your healthy body that is keeping you going. You can do that, look and feel great AND be super comfortable at the same time.
2. Are those your legs?! They sure are!
Let me be honest with you, the spring trend is really about mini skirts. If you saw the Golden Globes, you undoubtedly noticed that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were rocking some pretty short dresses. So, now I can say, “Think Tina Fey,” when I say to you, “mini skirts.” If minis work for your body type (I’m looking at you Diamond and Inverted Triangle figures) and your lifestyle (hello, subsection of women who can function in their lockdown lives in a mini skirt), then absolutely go for it. Because that seems not super realistic or desirable to me, I’m going to recommend shorts instead.
Things to keep in mind: Our eyes go to where the hemline hits. Therefore, if you aren’t fond of showing off your thighs, this length isn’t for you. Try something a little longer. Remember that in general, our attention is drawn to light and bright colors, textures, prints and skin. That means that a short hemline will immediately make your legs the focal point. This is a stellar opportunity to show off this feature.
3. Rock Clothes that Make You Happy (and make everyone else happy, too)
Who needs joy right now more than this world? Nobody. So, give yourself, your neighbors, your Zoom buddies- a little something special with a joyful print. You’d be surprised how much better you feel when you look in the mirror and see pieces that you adore and celebrate spring in a way that’s just right for you.
As we wrap up, I’d just like to take a moment to appreciate Need Supply, which closed in September. Over 12,000 stores closed in 2020 and most lists tend to include the heavy hitters. Of course, we all know of smaller operations that didn’t make it through. So, when your spring shopping impulse hits, remember to seek out your favorites first. Shop local. (Yes! Nordstrom is local.) Shop hyper local. (How about the boutique down the street?) Shop small. Shop unconventional. Opt for companies or brands owned by women or people of color. In short, remember to shop your values. I’m going to leave you with one last image that truly encapsulates the joy I feel when we get to start wearing spring pieces. It’s from the Poplin client photo shoot with Natasha in West Seattle. I hope it brings you some joy, too.
