My Favorite Things Right Now
As a personal stylist for women, I am always bursting with new favorites to share. Of course, I share all sorts of delightful finds in the newsletter, on the blog and on LinkedIn and Pinterest. But, sometimes, it’s just not enough. That’s when it’s clearly time for another collection of my favorite things right now. Here we go!
My Favorite Things Right Now
Kara Swisher’s Burn Book
First of all, who doesn’t love a book that references Mean Girls in the title?! Whether or not that was intentional, it worked for me. I tore through the audible version in three days and highly recommend it for women in and out of tech. Think of it as a history of the internet told by THE journalist who covered it all from the early days to now. I’m not deeply interested in tech, but I can tell you that I am THRILLED when someone who knows more than me on a subject agrees with me on the same subject. Who doesn’t? So when Swisher dove into the downsides of the lack of regulation on big tech companies and opportunities for the future, I cheered.
The Right Hearts
I keep thinking my obsession with hearts is on the way out, but somehow the trend’s grip continues to hold me tightly. My three favorites include the heart bag from Coperni, this glorious heart sweater from Pleasing (thank you, Harry Styles) and this pair of heart socks. I never thought I’d feel this way about the shape, but the pieces bring whimsy and joy to every outfit. Just be careful to keep your outfit from moving into juvenile territory by pairing with more sophisticated pieces.
Oversized earrings
I’ve always loved a bold earrings, but it’s starting to feel like the bigger the better. If you’re interested in this approach, be sure to stay authentic to your own personal style and pay attention to your proportions. Some choices may simply be too big for your petite frame. Personally, I’ve been rocking extra large hoops for more than a year or so and have moved into other styles for a similar fearless approach to accessorizing. Keep in mind that it’s easy to snag your hands or clothes on big earrings, so be careful. And as beautiful as those heavy options are, don’t go overboard. Your ears are yours forever, so if it feels too heavy, it is.
Channeling my inner CPA
I can’t seem to get enough of reading glasses that channel a 1970s or 1980s accountant. After I started wearing these beauties from Caddis, I discovered Gwenyth Paltrow had the same idea. That was just the beginning…..
Poplin Spring Photo Shoots
It’s finally time to kick off a string of client photo shoots. I love these because they offer up an opportunity to highlight the style journeys of real women. They are inspiring, instructive and most importantly, they are super fun.
Platforms, platforms, platforms
One of my very favorite pairs of shoes has been in and out of the closet lately. It feels like they are new again, despite owning them for nearly a decade. And they are just the beginning. I’m loving a bold platform shoe that has a low incline but a high impact.
My 2003 Self
Yes! Everyone is talking about the 90’s, and the 70’s and sometimes the 80’s. Good Lord. How’s a girl to stay on top of it all? I’ve discovered that a number of things calling to me lately are actually reminiscent of pieces I owned in the early 2000’s. Opaque tights with open toed shoes anyone? Sheer fitted tops. Vintage inspired pieces that are calling back to the 40’s and 60’s with black and white polka dots and Jackie O preppie pieces? How about crochet tops? A recent trip to Anthropologie had me deep on the nostalgia train to 2003.
Booming
Local news coverage is essential. It empowers citizens (that’s us!) to make informed decisions and it decreases corruption. Finding local news that is informative without being wildly depressing or focused on crime statistics isn’t always easy. I’m really enjoying Booming, a KUOW podcast about the city. It’s easy listening, short and thought provoking. Try the recent episode on The New Mommy Track highlighting the pros and cons of hybrid work for women and families.
Shoes at Anthropologie!
Speaking of Anthro. It is one of my favorite places to find shoes and finally, you can see some in real life at a local brick and mortar store. Sure, you can’t see very many, but it’s great to finally have a few choices to try on with your outfits and ideally, this will open the door to more shoes at the stores.
Denim dresses
Yes! That 90’s straight denim skirt with a slit in front is literally everywhere right now. But, that isn’t your only denim option. If you don’t already have a denim dress, this just might be the time. There are so many styles that make it easy to choose something that is uniquely yours. Remember to filter by body type and choose the wash that is just right for you. Blue, black and white denim are all solid choices or branch out with a colored option. Regardless, enjoy something that is just right for spring, is comfortable and can quickly become a go-to. There are so many choices that can be worn solo or paired with a jacket or even a cardigan. Personally, I’m excited about the resurgence of the denim skirt and dress because they are both so easy to pair and to wear.
