From Sloppy to Sophisticated: How to Wear an Oversized Cardigan.

As a personal stylist, I often hear clients say, "you'd need to show me how to wear that." Well, today, my Dear Reader, I'm showing you how to wear an oversized cardigan. Here we go.

From Sloppy to Sophisticated:

How to Wear an Oversized Cardigan.

Oversized pieces have certainly made a comeback. Personally, I'm a fan. The trick is understanding how to rock that oversized item without looking like you just rolled out of bed. Yes, it can be done.

Long Mohair Blend Cardigan. & Other Stories. $125.

Dayne Top. Available in two colors. All Saints. Was: $105 Now: $52.

Skinny Skinny Jeans. Madewell. $115. Take an additional 30% off with code: TODOLIST.

1. With skinnies.

Luckily, we've entered a new phase in fashion that empowers the fashionable woman to wear jeans of all different styles. No longer are we restricted to skinnies. That being said, there are still times (and bodies) for which skinnies are ideal. If you have an inverted triangle body, skinnies are one of the least successful pant styles for you. If you absolutely love them, try a colored or textured pair. For women with other body types, try an oversized cardigan with skinnies. Feel free to try a loose fitting or fitted top underneath, depending on whether or not you'd like to minimize your stomach.

Long Open Front Cardigan. Old Navy. Was: $54 Now: $29.

Felicity & Coco Seamed Pencil Dress. Available in multiple colors and in petite. Nordstrom. $98.

2. Over a fitted dress.

An oversized cardigan can look lovely over a fitted dress or a pencil skirt and fitted top. Show off your curves with your dress and add the cardigan to make the look a little less bombastic. Add a skinny belt over the cardi and the dress to emphasize your tiny waist (trust me, it will look tiny, just opt for the smallest part). Simply remove the cardigan for drinks or dinner after work. It's important that you include either lipstick, sophisticated accessories or heels to complete the look. Of course, you can opt for all three. At least one turns this from frumpy to fabulous.

Granada Cardigan. Need Supply. Was: $98 Now: $53.

 Striped Boatneck Top. J.Crew. $55.

 Tibi Agathe Culottes. Nordstrom. $565.

Rachel Comey Kai Slingback Mule. Nordstrom. $437.

3. With culottes or wide leg pants.

This is when things get a little tricky. If you are petite, oversized options can make you look smaller. The drawback is when you start to look juvenile. If that's not happening, go for it. Regardless of your height, heels will help execute this look at the highest level. If you are more interested in an urban vibe, embrace it with or without heels. Personally, I vote for platforms in this situation. Be aware that wearing a totally oversized outfit doesn't show off your figure. But, if you feel that it communicates your personal style, rock it with abandon.

I adore a high quality oversized cardigan. A word to the wise: keep yourself from wearing the same one multiple times in a week. Before you know it, your once sophisticated sweater has become your cozy, "office sweater" warming your chair at night and topping off every outfit during the day. This is not the goal, my dear. You are too good for that. Looking for an alternative to your much loved cardigan? Perhaps my post on alternatives to cardigans can help.
