The Best Way to Spend Your Clothing Budget Right Now
As a personal stylist for women, I’m well aware of the post-holiday retail slump. These are the months when we run around and use our gift cards but often feel uninspired. After all, spring isn’t quite here yet, but it’s too cold to shop for the season change anyway.
Not wot worry, Dear Reader, have I got some good news for you. Shopping this time of year has some major benefits.
The Best Way to Spend Your Clothing Budget Right Now
On Designer Items You’ve Been Coveting
Start stalking your favorite designer sites. They, too, are moving from winter to spring and they’ll need to make room for happy, new pieces. Remember that sweater you wanted in November? It’s probably deeply discounted right now. And, let’s be honest, you can wear it now and again in a few months time.
2. On Boots and Coats
When I’m working with a client, we naturally discuss her shopping budget. There’s a big range between spending in fall and winter and spending in spring and summer. Two words: Boots and Coats. Those are the biggest ticket items (unless you are a luxury handbag sort of girl, in which case, that’s up there, too). If you love brands like Coclico, start searching for them online and watch the price drop. Of course, sizes go quickly at the end of the season, so be mindful of your search. Check out local shops as they clear out these winter items, as well.
3. At the Outlet Mall
I have a friend who is also a client and one year we hit the Tulalip Outlet Mall in February. From that point on she wanted to do it every year around President’s Day. Those folks are clearing things out, too. Of course, we’re at the third tier at this point. Items have gone from the full line store to the outlet and now to the sale racks. So, you’re going to be sorting through a lot of, well, stuff. If you get overwhelmed by shopping, this isn’t for you. But, if you love the hunt, plan for a trip to the outlets.
4. On President’s Day Sales (that means February)
Retail loves a three day weekend. Ever since our son was born, we sit down with him on President’s Day to write a letter to an elected official to advocate for something he believes in. In the beginning, obviously, we did it. But, as he could start talking, we let him dictate and we wrote it up and sent it off. Having a President’s Day tradition is pretty great. And yes, you can steal ours. You can also pair that (or just enjoying a much needed day off) with some strategic shopping. If you are willing to risk items that you are loving right now disappearing, wait for President’s Day for even more deals. (I realize I just went from activism to shopping; but you can do both and be a good person, my dear. This isn’t an either or life we’re living.)
As always, remember that no deal justifies buying something that does not communicate your personal style. The idea is to embrace who you are and save some cash while you are at it.
