Seattle Boutique: Foundation Fits Your Style & Your Budget

I had a client tell me that she loves the idea of boutiques, but she doesn't love the price tags. There's a common misconception that shopping at local shops translates to high prices. I'm always excited to share boutiques that fit every budget without sacrificing style. Queen Anne's newest shop, Foundation, does just that.

I went to the grand opening, hoping to get ideas for clients and walked out with a bag of pieces for myself. Naturally, I raced home to update you, Dear Reader on Seattle's newest option for the stylish woman on a budget.

5 Things You Need to Know About Foundation

1. There's Something for Everyone.

It's all merchandised so nicely. In addition to essential neutrals, you'll also find plaids, polka dots and more inside.

Owner Summer David stocked the store with, "workhorse pieces that you go back to again and again." The majority of us have a few pieces that we can't live without. Imagine a boutique filled with those. It's a small space, but it's jam packed with just the right options. Summer's extensive background in apparel is obvious by the smart choices she's made. Think Madewell with a twist and at a more affordable price point. (Gingham, polka dots, neutrals and more.)

2. The Price Range is Thoughtful & Empowering.

Here's a photo of my stash with the price tags. I've already used every one of these pieces.

I love those moments when you can afford to invest a little more in one piece because of the cash you are saving on another. I experienced that thrill at Foundation. An eighty dollar long cardigan is a reasonable price on its own. Now, pair it with a $35 large tote bag and $10 earrings. Are you serious? Summer thinks like a shopper. If everything is an investment piece, there's not much left over for the whimsical adventurous options. Yes, there are sweaters north of $200, but they are certainly worth it and they work nicely with the other pieces. A $15 stylish basic tee, for instance.

3.  Quality Isn't Sacrificed for Price.

 My $10 earrings!

When you are good at buying, you are good at buying. The fabrics are soft and often natural. You won't find cheap poly blend items. As I write, I'm reminded of the luxurious navy striped turtleneck that I left behind. Perhaps a second trip is in order.

4. The Level of Service is JUST Right.

Service is everything. In close quarters it's easy for employees to try to offer so much space to a customer that he/she feels ignored. In contrast, it's challenging to browse when you feel like someone is on top of you. Summer strikes a balance. She informs you about the brands (after all, she chose them); while giving you space to peruse the area. Yes, I walked in on the first day (and was possibly the first customer). I have a strong feeling that this level of attention will continue.

5.  The Parking is a Dream.

This may sound like a small thing, but let's face it, if there's anything Seattle-ites can agree on it's the struggle with transportation issues. Foundation happens to be on the same block as Cake Skincare at the top of Queen Anne Hill. Years of experience have taught me that this particular block has magical parking. Swinging by on your way to Trader Joe's or Paper Source is easy.

The shop is closed Mondays and Tuesdays each week. Otherwise, it's just waiting for you to swing by. And, as always, say, "hello" from Poplin.
