25 of My Favorite Midi Skirts for Your Unique Style and Values
As a personal stylist for women, I’m all about style that is values based and embraces inclusive sizing, whenever possible. From my perspective, choosing pieces that communicate your authentic personal style, flatter your frame and are functional for your lifestyle are essential. Pieces that reflect your values are ideal, but not always possible. When I find those options that are all the things, I’m ready to shout it from the rooftops.
One of my favorite things about my job is my commitment to the individual. Her values may or may not be my values. Her style may not be my style. But, working together we create a wardrobe that is authentic to her and one that we both see as beautiful. Personal values can range from preferring companies run by woman, those that offer sustainable pieces, perhaps a company that only uses ethical practices with workers and is committed to avoiding slavery. Other folks prefer companies with commitments to LGBTQ+ rights, empowering women in developing countries and so on. It’s all about what feels important to her and how we can integrate her values into her purchasing decisions.
With that, I also love to stay on top of trends and see what current trends align with her style. And the trend of the moment is midi skirts. Skirts that hit mid calf are midis. I love them because they are modest enough to be super functional for life and also look lovely with boots or (often) with sneakers. In the Pacific Northwest, a midi skirt is a dream because it doesn’t get wet from touching the ground in the rain, yet provides more warmth than a shorter skirt as the weather cools.
Yes, they can be unflattering as a midi skirt does have a tendency to cut off her legs and make them appear shorter. First, two essential style tips when rocking a midi skirt. If it appears that her legs aren’t looking their best, keep two things in mind.
Opt for hosiery or boots of the same or similar color to elongate her legs.
If she’s short waisted, embracing the midi can actually balance her vertical shape, giving the impression that her torso is longer in proportion to her legs.
Feel ready? Let’s dive into 25 of my favorite midi skirts including some with inclusive sizing, others made from BIPOC designers, some sustainable choices, others committed to fair labor practices and some made in the US or sold at local boutiques. Congrats on using your power for good. Remember look good. Feel good. Do good. Let’s go!
P.S. One more thing. When talking about how to dress your body, I’ll often give you advice about what pieces minimize or maximize various parts of your frame. This guidance is really all about how you happen to be feeling that day, not about flaws in your figure. I always say, don’t change your body, change your clothes. I, for one, carry my weight in my stomach. Most days, I may not think about it at all, but on the off day when it’s top of mind, minimizing it feels very important. When you have a similar day, I want you to know how to move forward, as well. Getting dressed should be fun:)
My 25 Favorite Midi Skirts
Ruching is always flattering and this cut minimizes your stomach. Plus dark florals are super in this season.
Truly obsessed with this BIPOC designer and this skirt, which comes in multiple colors, listed separately. Drawing the eye to the vertical middle, this skirt minimizes your stomach.
A soft a-line skirt balances out broad shoulders or can minimize hips, stomach and/or her bum. Remember that shiny fabric reflects light and will draw the eye, so pay attention to where the eye is drawn.
Pleats on the bottom are so good for women with rectangle, inverted triangle or hourglass shaped figures. Keep in mind that they can add volume. This vintage inspired print with coordinating boots elongates her lower half and is a real fashion statement.
Embrace your bohemian side with this flowy skirt. Yes, it’s technically an ankle length skirt and not a midi, but I know sometimes pieces are too good to pass up. Longer skirts are super easy to layer fleece lined tights, leggings or silk long underwear underneath to keep you warm as the weather changes.
I think this might be my favorite Indigenous designer and you’ll get sucked into her site, for sure. A fun, effortless piece that works well with wedges or boots in colder weather. Show your waist, even with a sweater to keep it from engulfing you.
If you have an inverted triangle body type and you are dying to wear a black skirt, this is the one for you. Expressive, fun and a great way to show off a stomach you love, this skirt is a keeper.
How much fun is this?! A-line skirts are a great way to balance a larger bust or shoulders. This party skirt is great with solids and I also love it with a horizontal striped top. Check out something similar on Poplin client Swathy. She has a triangle shaped figure and adding the striped top and jacket helped balance out her voluminous skirt.
This sustainable soft wrap skirt is effortless, sophisticated and a go-to for the spring, summer and fall.
One of my favorite brands, this expressive a-line skirt is super flattering for most figures because it does not have pleats. Try it with a cropped sweatshirt to show off your waist without needing to tuck in your top.
Truly obsessed with this San Francisco based brand that collaborates with artisans to make unique prints. There’s even a Grumpy Cat romper!
Leather and vegan leather are still going strong and add an edge to any outfit. I like pairing those fabrics with anything that looks or feels natural: denim, cotton, chambray, cashmere, silk.
An expressive splash of designer excitement to channel spring, even in the fall. I love this with grey, yellow, orange or green knee high boots. Yes! You can.
Another super flattering option for the curvy set. As we mentioned earlier, ruching is a great way to show off curves and this high waisted skirt also minimizes your stomach and is easy to pair. Coordinated sets are still a great choice and will elongate your frame.
Love the styling in this photo as a great reminder that you don’t need a heavy weight skirt to pair with a chunky sweater. Just balance things out with a boot or chunky shoe.
No one will ever forget this fearless ensemble. I’m really into this brand right now, started by a woman and her partner. This is a solid choice for showing off curves in a super comfortable way.
There are so many florals to choose from. Be sure to go with something that is authentic to your personal style and in a color palette that you’ll actually wear. Don’t compromise or it will just hang in your closet with the tags on.
Vegan leather and leather are still going AND colored versions of both are strong, too. Celebrate the day with a fun alternative to black. Remember, green goes with everything, it’s just finding the proper green to coordinate with your color palette that is key. After all, the stem never clashes with the flower.
Animal print was already sexy before this photo came along. Just keep it classy with high quality fabrics, like this one.
One of my favorite all around designers brings us an updated take on a classic. This skirt is sure to be a workhorse for years to come and say, “hello” to pockets! High rise minimizes her stomach and side pockets give her hips. So, if either of those approaches appeal to you, this is a stellar choice.
The subtle detail of buttons down the middle of the skirt minimize her stomach and make this piece super functional. 90’s inspired dark florals are on trend, for sure. Just stay true to your aesthetic. The slight a-line of this choice also makes it work well for anyone with curves on the bottom.
Universally flattering, this soft a-line is all the things. The only danger is for a petite women who might find it overwhelms her frame. If that’s the case, simply hem it to ensure the ideal fit. Otherwise, dance around and celebrate this easy to pair, easy to wear sustainable skirt.
This is reminiscent of one of my all time favorite skirts. The photo print is expressive and is sure to draw compliments. Try it with a striped top to mix things up or a chunky sweater with the french tuck or a cropped choice.
Last but absolutely not least, this stunning choice will close things out. Yes, it’s a full length skirt and not a midi. But, would you have forgiven me if I didn’t include it?! Remember, clothes can make you feel like the best version of yourself. Don’t be afraid to tell the world who you are without using your outside voice.
And there you have it! 25 of my favorite midi skirts right now. I hope you found one that aligns with your values, flatters your frame and communicates your authentic personal style. I can’t wait to hear what you think!
