11 Fall 2022 Fashion Trends
As a personal stylist for women, it’s my job to stay on top of trends, but also to guide each client to stay true to her authentic personal style and choose pieces that flatter her frame. This can be a major challenge for a woman as the new shiny objects are so alluring, but can also end in disappointment. If you have tags on clothes still in your closet, I’m talking to you:)
Not to worry! The key is to choose pieces that communicate your authentic personal style while also staying current. One way to do that is to see what’s out there right now, then narrow down your choices to see what’s right for YOU.
This fall, it’s all about the 1970’s or the 1990’s. If you lived through one of both of these, you’ll likely have feelings about both. But just remember, inspired by doesn’t have to mean pieces that are literal copies of items from the past. Avoid costume-like looks by including vintage inspired pieces with more modern touches. To get you started, here’s what’s happening right now in Fall Fashion. As always, I’d love to hear what’s resonating with you.
Fall’s Biggest Fashion Trends
Leather or faux leather trenches
Truly no one does vegan leather like the Reset. I’ve had the brand’s trench for a few years now and it’s my go-to rain jacket. It’s soft and supple. Really. Whether you go with the Reset or another version, a vegan leather or leather trench is 70’s inspired and crazy practical, especially in the Pacific Northwest. I like to pair it with this hat when it is actually raining or layer a hoodie underneath.
Suit vest
Masculine inspired pieces continue to be in the mix. If that’s your vibe, embrace it. If not, try pairing more masculine pieces with feminine options. Suit vests are coming back strong and are especially flattering as part of a coordinated set, elongating your body.
Unexpected trenches
If leather and vegan leather aren’t your thing, there are plenty more trenches where those came from. Any unexpected take on the old classic is big right now. From bold prints to surprising details, your fall never felt so good.
Retro inspired ski jackets and windbreakers (think 70’s and 80’s)
Remember to keep your body shape and personal style in mind when shopping for these gems. They are super functional and fun and will quickly make your top half feel more dominant. So, if you have a triangle shaped figure, for example, you’ll be much happier in one of these than someone with an inverted triangle shape.
Baggy denim
Speaking of 90’s, when we say baggy denim, we mean oversized options that are intended to be worn slouchy. Although the pants may not be low rise, the idea is to purchase a larger size and wear them lower on your hips. Again, pair oversized pieces with something more form fitting so you don’t get lost. Or, at least try for a balanced shape with neither your top nor bottom half more dominant than the other.
Leather, Vegan Leather and more leather
This trend continues to go strong. Remember, leather can often feel more luxurious but is less resilient in rain. Vegan leather is more affordable, but can often feel like a low quality piece, depending on the brand. I like both, depending on the situation, functionality needed and your personal values.
Square Toe Loafers
Sure! Round toe loafers are out there, too. But, the runways were more enthusiastic about square toe style. I recommended a pair to my client, Laura, on her Uber Wishlist in February and was ELATED with the final pairings we created using her new and existing pieces. (While hers are no longer available, you can see her awesomeness above.) And, yes, the green pair above are actually mule loafers because the back is open. I see you, fashion enthusiast!
Opera gloves
One of my very favorite pieces, I’ve always been a strong proponent of opera gloves because I’m such a fan of 3/4 length sleeves. Vintage coats are desperate for a pair to keep you warm. Going out? Opera gloves are just right for that, too. (I wore them at my wedding!) Kim Kardashian is owning the catsuit with opera gloves look as only she can. Expect glimpses of her approach to trickle down to the rest of us in more functional ways. Here’s some guidance on another of fall’s big trends, Catsuits.
Stackable rings
This boho trend continues its meteoric rise. I like to limit each hand to one metal- so silver on my left and gold on my right. You can also try mixing and matching metals on the same hand as a way to bring together different pieces of your outfit with more than one type of metal accent.
Bombers, especially oversized
Both of these images are beautiful, and yet it can be really easy to have an oversized bomber swallow you up. So, pair them with pieces that show your shape and something on the bottom to balance the eye. This is all 90’s all the time, my friend.
