10 Ways to Look Fashionable When You are Supporting the Seahawks
As a personal stylist for women, I spend a significant amount of time in women's closets. A woman's closet should feel like a boutique curated just for her. Every piece should make her feel like her authentic self. If it doesn't, it's out. Closet Edits are guided by each client's personal style and body type, with one exception: the sports jersey. The Seahawks/Sounders (and every so often, Mariners) section is the third rail of closet edits, never to be touched. However, it does spark lots of questions. "How do I look stylish at the games? What do I wear this with?" And so on. This has come up so frequently that a blog post is clearly in order. For all my clients and readers who support a team, any team, and want to do it looking your best, this one's for you.
10 Ways to Look Fashionable as the 12th (Wo)man
1. Highlight your edgy side.
A Jersey, long cardigan, leather leggings and slip on sneakers are just right for the urban Seahawks fan. Your budget, taste and values will drive whether you opt for vegan leather or leather leggings. The point is, rock those babies with your jersey. You'll be comfortable, current and set yourself apart from the pack. Choose a high waisted option to minimize your stomach, if that's a concern.
2. Rocking the rainboots.
Part of the joy of living in the rainy city is being able to embrace it. Rainboots are an effortless way to express your style and stay comfortable, especially if you are planning to attend the game. Pair them with skinnies, leggings, a dress or even culottes. Lilly Bee has an entire Game Day collection that allows you to choose color combinations to support your favorite team through your footwear.
3. Try it with texture or print.
Go beyond your favorite jeans and mix and match with colors, textures or prints. Try white skinnies, a striped shirt and boat shoes. Or the quilted skirt below and a navy turtleneck under the team hoodie below.
4. Oxfords and team socks.
Let your socks do the heavy lifting. If you are lacking the Seahawks socks, don't let it bring you down. Try team colored shoe laces for a sophisticated but still bold approach.
5. Jeans and fan favorite shoes.
Jeans are never a bad choice and a fitted team shirt is a flattering look for the woman who is looking to send a strong message of team support. Long-sleeved options allow you to layer fitted tees underneath for added warmth while keeping your outfit streamlined. Add a pair of unexpected shoes to seal the deal. Both options below offer lots of freedom of expression. Go online or swing by Nordstrom in Bellevue Square to design your own pair of Shoes of Prey or select from a variety of colors and styles at Lilly Bee.
6. Fitted Jersey with a high-waisted A-line skirt.
A-line skirts are flattering on most body types and bring a touch of femininity to your look. Tuck in your fitted jersey and add shoes that communicate your personal style. I like navy or grey wingtips, loafers, ankle boots or d'Orsay flats with this ensemble. Add a blazer, leather jacket or cardigan for warmth.
7. As an accessory.
If you prefer a more subtle approach, accessories are the way to go. A team necklace is a lovely addition to even the most conservative outfit and the scarf is ideal when you are out in the elements. Accessories are also a fail-safe gift option as there's no need to determine a friend or loved one's size. Winning!
8. Celebrate your feminine side.
Shoes make people happy and they are sure to elicit lots of comments from the peanut gallery. Why not make your next shoe purchase something that can also work for game day? Blue and green act as neutrals in many outfits, working with every color. The trick is making sure the intensity of the color is a fit with the intensity of the other colors in your outfit. After all, the stem never clashes with the flower and the sky goes with everything. Regardless of your personal style, there is sure to be a pair of blue or green shoes that are just right for you.
9. Opt for team colors sans logos.
If you're lacking in official Seahawks gear, the easiest way to support the team is to embrace the color scheme. Sure, it's ideal that you use the specific shades of blue and green that represent the Seahawks. However, it's also important that you are true to your personal style and the colors that flatter your skin tone. People will still hear you loud and clear.
10. The Unconventional Approach.
This is my personal favorite. If you pride yourself on opting for a more urban look that is slightly weird and yet completely awesome, you too can support your team while maintaining your personal style. Try unexpected materials and choose a vintage inspired team element, like the classic white tank with a twist.
And there you have it. Above all, stay true to yourself and know that each year you are free to iterate. If you purchase a piece that you love and is one of the team colors, keep it in your closet even if you aren't sure how to use it. There's always a way. Ideally, this list will help. Let me know how it goes!
