Spring Cleaning: 5 Useful Things to Do with Your Old Clothes Other Than Purging Them

I spent yesterday afternoon revamping my husband’s closet. Fun Fact: Years prior to starting Poplin and becoming a Personal Stylist, I would create outfits for my husband and take photos of them that he could reference on his phone. He used them all the time and when it was time for a career change, we realized that what are now, “outfit photos” for clients, are an incredibly useful tool for men and women trying to look their best and get out of the house quickly.

Back to the closet. If you, like me, are especially inclined to do some deep cleaning and reorganizing as the weather changes, you likely already have a few bags of clothes and shoes to be donated. Before those head out the door, there are some really useful ways you can capitalize on your beloved pieces before they go to their next owner.

Celebrate Lunar New Year and Black History Month with Hollaback's Bystander Intervention Training

As a virtual personal stylist for women, one might expect that all my blog posts are about clothing and accessories. If you’ve been a part of the Poplin community for some time, you know that isn’t the case:) Personal style is about communicating who you are without saying a word. Your clothes can do that. Values are also a part of your personal style. We often talk about sustainable choices when it comes to clothes from shopping second hand and tailoring your pieces to opting for choices that keep the planet in mind.

Living your values is also how you show up for other members of your community. While I’ve been in Seattle nearly 20 years, I’m still a Northern Californian at heart. That means that I constantly interact with strangers, a very not Pacific Northwest practice. My willingness to interact with random folks also means that while I’m not afraid to intervene when I see harassment or discrimination, I have wondered if I could do things in a more effective way. Enter Hollaback.

How to Look Amazing in a Sweatshirt

As a personal stylist for women, I get all sorts of questions about what to wear and how to wear it. As a stylist during the pandemic, those questions move quickly to loungewear and how to look great while being supremely comfortable. Fortunately, functionality has always been at the core of Poplin, so answering these questions is easy.

Personally, I’ve never been much of a sweatshirt person. I always felt pretty sloppy in them. Historically, I’ve owned one or two at a time, if any at all. Now, I have an entire drawer of sweatshirts and I wear one most days. I love the versatility, the ability to wash them so quickly and with all the germ awareness we’ve developed over the past few years, they feel much cleaner than a sweater because you can bleach them or wash them in hot water. Options abound. The key is ensuring that you feel like your authentic self AND that you are still communicating your style at the level that makes you look and feel your best.

First off, you’ll want to choose the right sweatshirt for your body type and your authentic personal style. Plus, it should obviously be cozy. Otherwise, what are we doing here? Here are some ideas to kick things off.

Top 5 Reasons Why I’m Taking my Personal Styling Business off of Facebook and Instagram

For those of you who have been with me for some period of time, you know that I feel very strongly that each of us has the power to make change for the better. It’s why we vote. It’s why we give back to our communities. It’s also the reason we make intentional choices about our consumption and the way we treat one another. I believe that we have more confidence to be our best selves in the world when we know that we are communicating who we really are via our clothing. It’s highly likely that you believe all of this, too, which is why you are a member of the Poplin community. Thanks very much for being here.

I’ve made no secret of my general values and also do my best to acknowledge that not everyone shares those values. And that’s just fine. I’m not interested in a world where we are all the same. It’s often been said that my superpower is to “see” people. And, I certainly work very hard to do that. I say all this to make sure that it is clear that I’m not interested in villainizing anyone for participating in any platform or for working at any company.

In fact, a large portion of my client base works in technology, including a number of people at Facebook. I absolutely believe that these folks are doing the best they possibly can to change the system from the inside. I don’t fault them for it. In fact, I admire the commitment and the willingness to do the very hard work it takes to change the machine. Any of us who have worked at large organizations know that just working somewhere does not give you power to control that organization.

But, Facebook absolutely does need to change in order for our society to flourish.

Each one of us has the voice to help push the company in that direction. The most powerful way to do that is to leave the platforms, and wait until they have addressed their issues before we return. And so, despite the danger that it may pose to my business, that’s what I’m doing. Many of you have asked why I’m leaving and I’ve avoided getting too specific thus far. But, I’ve realized that this is not helpful to you and diminishes the impact of my actions. Because I am not just leaving for myself, I’m leaving for all of us. And between you and me, I hope you decide to leave, too.

So, here’s a high-level list of the reasons that make it clear to me I can no longer participate in Facebook or Instagram. After all, if I’m still on Instagram, I’m just taking the easy way out. Yes! I’ll miss seeing you and your updates. Yes! It will be much more difficult for me to stay engaged in my local community. And yes! Connection is extremely important to me, now more than ever. But it must be done. And it must be done before the next presidential election. So, here I am. Doing it. And here’s why.

The Hippest House Shoe with Arch Support

As a personal stylist for women, one thing that comes up repeatedly is the struggle to find comfortable attractive shoes. Whether you suffer from Plantar Fascitis, general foot pain or just want to end the day without worrying about your feet, the proper shoe is vital. Over the past few years, we’re seeing more and more clients with foot issues thanks to working from home and living in slippers or flip flops.

As someone who’s had a hybrid work environment for several years (working from home, at retailers and at client homes), this is one of my obsessions. So, when I find unicorn shoes, I have to share.

Unexpected and Thoughtful Gifts for Everyone on Your List

I like the idea that COVID won’t permeate every aspect of our lives, especially when it comes to the holiday season. Based on conversations with clients and friends, it’s clear that trying to find the ideal gift often also means considering how that relates to our current very strange state of being. As a personal stylist for women, I often tell people that my job is to “see” people. When I meet a new client, I listen to her and try to see what she sees as her aspirational style. Then, using her budget, body type, lifestyle and personal style, I translate that into a strategy to help her embrace her authentic personal style. Uber Wishlists are a solid representation of how I translate her words into actual items. This, my Dear Reader, is essentially spending 8 years of my professional life gifting.

How to Order an Amazon Gift for Your Partner and Keep it a Surprise

As a personal stylist for women, I spend a very large amount of my time on the interwebs. In that capacity, I’m on the hunt for items that help each client communicate her authentic personal style to the world using a strategy to balance her budget, body type, lifestyle and personal style. As a mom and wife who likes to keep things fun and eventful, I also spend a lot of internet time trying to keep my online orders a surprise from my husband and son…. which has been challenging… until now.

First off, yes! You should absolutely shop local, if you can. And full disclosure, my husband is a designer for Amazon. Personally, I tend to search for a specific item I’d like on Amazon and then move on. But, that doesn’t mean I don’t struggle with this surprise factor. And, I know my clients face this, too. So, this holiday season, here are a couple of game changers for shopping on Amazon when gifting to your family. Off we go!

4 French Girl Style Brands You've Never Heard Of

As a personal stylist for women, I get LOTS of questions about how to channel, “French Girl Style.” Over the years, I’ve come to understand that French Girl Style, more than anything, is a state of mind. It’s about an effortless self confidence that isn’t focused on showing off brands or following trends. Typically, it means having a capsule collection of pieces that make her look and feel great. A striped shirt (naturally), jeans, a classic button down shirt, a black dress or two. Then, the flavor pieces come in as something unexpected, likely edgy or sexy to amp everything up. This could be a leather jacket, textured hosiery, a bold lip or accessories in her signature color. Yup, her signature color. A beautiful Parisian friend of mine explained to me years ago that French women like to have one color that is their, “signature color.” It comes up again and again in her wardrobe. Otherwise, it’s all about neutrals. (My friend’s color is pink.)

So, if you are going for a literal interpretation of this approach, you now have it. If, on the other hand, you are looking for an Amercianized version of this, looking to some specific brands can help you lock in your target. I’m a big fan of all four of these sites. I expect you’ll find them as addicting as I am. Each one offers a different aspect of French Girl Style. All of them exuding the confidence, sophistication and effortlessness that we are pining for. Have fun with it and as always, let me know how it goes.

Must Have: Shibori Tie Dye

Last year, my incredible personal styling client, Melanie introduced me to the term Japandy. I had never heard of it before. Apparently, it’s the marriage of Japanese inspired style and Scandinavian inspired style. I laughed because apparently my husband and I have been Japandy enthusiasts for years without knowing we were part of a named club;) As Melanie and I chatted about our mutual love for Japandy, we also talked about the attraction to Shibori, a Japanese style of tie dye using “thread to isolate many small related points on the fabric.”

Since then, it’s been clear to me that you, my Dear Reader, might just adore Shibori as much as Melanie and I do. If so, here’s a collection of my very favorite things right now in Shibori- land. We’ll kick things off with a photo of Melanie from her business photo shoot. She lives in the Bay Area so we work together virtually. Part of that work was selecting pieces for her photo shoot, which also explains why she isn’t in a traditional Poplin photo shoot because let’s face it, I’d be a fool not to feature her if she were in the area.

Pacific Northwest Style: What can I Wear Besides my Fleece Jacket?

As a personal stylist for women based in Seattle, I’m well aware of how much my clients rely on their fleece jackets. During the Closet Edit, we inevitably end up in a sea of fleece with her face full of dread. She’s wondering if I’m going to pull that fleece out of the clutches of her cold dead hands. Typically, I am not. What I am going to do is offer her alternatives to the same old North Face choice she’s had for years. She’ll need to hold onto that essential to walk the dog until her Uber Wishlist arrives. THEN… we’ll move past that old fleece.

There’s no need for sacrificing comfort for style. Personal style is all about feeling beautiful and confident because you know you are expressing your authentic self to the world via your clothing. If you are uncomfortable, you are certainly not feeling confident.

Elevated Loungewear: Hip Options for Home

As a personal stylist for women, I’ve had a hybrid work schedule for over 8 years. I’ve spent that time hopping from a client’s home to a retailer to creating online resources for her from my desk at home. Throughout the pandemic, I’ve heard from a number of clients struggling to find the balance of comfort and style while working and often parenting from home and now heading into the office one day a week or a month or maybe never. It’s tricky, but it absolutely can be done. And fortunately for all of us, designers and retailers have doubled down on loungewear so there are more attractive options than ever before. Here are some of my favs.
